AMBER FINALLY GOES TO LA! 😱 But Seeing DAVE With EVELYN Leaves Her COMPLETELY STUNNED
Amber stepped out of the arrivals terminal at LAX, the warm California air hitting her face like a physical wave. After months of late-night phone calls, missed connections, and counting down the days, she had finally done it. She had flown across the country to visit Dave. Her heart beat with a fluttery excitement as she scanned the crowd outside the gate. She could already picture his crooked smile, the way his eyes lit up when he saw her, and the massive hug that would make the exhausting red-eye flight worth every second.
She pulled out her phone to send a quick text: Just landed! Walking out to the passenger pickup.
No immediate reply, but she figured traffic on Sepulveda was just being its usual chaotic self. Pulling her suitcase behind her, she made her way toward the curbside pickup zone.
That was when her world ground to a sudden halt.
Parked just a few yards away near the rideshare lane was Dave's recognizable dark gray sedan. But Dave wasn't inside waiting. He was standing beside the open passenger door, laughing—a rich, familiar laugh that instantly froze the blood in Amber’s veins.
Standing right in front of him, leaning casually against the car, was Evelyn.
Evelyn, the "just a childhood friend" he always brushed off whenever her name popped up on his phone. Evelyn, who was supposed to be living three states away.
Amber stood frozen in the middle of the crowded sidewalk, travelers pushing past her on all sides, but everything felt dead silent. She watched as Evelyn reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Dave’s forehead. Dave didn’t pull away. Instead, he smiled down at her, placing a hand on her waist to guide her toward the passenger seat.
The betrayal hit Amber in the chest like a physical blow. Her hand tightened around the handle of her suitcase until her knuckles turned white. Tears stung the back of her eyes, but shock held them at bay. Was this the surprise? Was this why he had been so distant the past two weeks?
She had two choices: turn around, walk right back into the terminal, and book the next flight home—or face it head-on.
Taking a deep, trembling breath, Amber squared her shoulders. She forced her feet forward, each step heavy as lead, until she stood just ten feet away from the car.
"Dave?"
His name left her throat barely above a whisper, but it echoed like thunder in the space between them.
Dave turned around instantly, his expression shifting from effortless joy to sheer, unadulterated panic in a fraction of a second. "Amber? What—what are you doing here already? You said your flight landed at five!"
"It landed early," Amber said, her voice eerily calm despite the storm raging inside her. Her gaze shifted directly to Evelyn, who was now leaning against the hood, crossing her arms with an unbothered, almost amused expression. "Care to introduce us?"
"Amber, look, it’s not what it looks like," Dave stuttered, stepping forward with his hands raised in surrender. "Evelyn’s flight got in an hour ago. Her car broke down, and she needed a ride to her apartment, so—"
"You told me you were at work," Amber interrupted, her voice finally cracking under the weight of the realization. "You said you couldn't pick me up at the gate because of an urgent meeting. But you had time to pick her up?"
Evelyn finally spoke up, tilting her head. "Dave, you didn't tell her I was moving to LA this week? We're going to be rooming together while I look for a place."
The words hung in the warm air like a fog. Rooming together.
Dave swallowed hard, looking between the two of them, completely trapped in his own web of lies. "Amber, let me explain in the car. Please. Get in."
Amber looked at the passenger seat where Evelyn’s designer handbag already sat, then at Dave’s anxious face. The rose-tinted glasses she had worn for the past year shattered completely.
"No," Amber said clearly. She lifted her chin, taking a single step backward. "Keep the seat. You're going to need it."
"Amber, wait!" Dave lunged forward to grab her arm, but she pulled away cleanly.
"Don't touch me, Dave," she said, her voice steadying with a newfound strength she didn't know she had. "I came to LA for a future with you. But I'm not going to fight for space in a life that already belongs to someone else."
Without waiting for another word, Amber turned on her heel. She marched toward the taxi queue, ignoring Dave calling her name over the roar of airport traffic. As she slid into the back of a yellow cab, the driver looked at her in the rearview mirror.
"Where to, miss?"
Amber looked back one last time, seeing Dave standing on the curb, head in his hands, with Evelyn watching from the car. She wiped a single tear from her cheek, drew a long breath, and smiled faintly.
"Take me to the nearest luxury hotel on the beach," Amber said. "My vacation is just getting started."
