WHEN BETHANY X BOYFRIEND POP UP AT HOSPITAL

The hospital room was painfully quiet except for the steady beeping of machines beside Bethany’s bed.

Rain tapped softly against the window while pale afternoon light filled the room with a cold, lonely feeling. Bethany sat propped up against her pillows wearing a hospital gown, staring blankly at the television without actually watching it.

Her body hurt.

But honestly…

Her heart hurt worse.

The accident from two nights ago had left bruises across her arms and stitches near her shoulder. Doctors said she was lucky things weren’t worse.

Lucky.

That word made her want to laugh bitterly.

Because nothing about her life felt lucky anymore.

Not after Larry.

Not after the endless drama.

Not after everything falling apart.

Bethany slowly looked toward the flowers sitting on the table beside her bed. Some came from family. Some from friends.

None from Larry.

That hurt more than she wanted to admit.

Even after all the pain he caused her…

A part of her still waited for him to walk through the door.

But he never came.

Instead, he barely texted.

“Hope you okay.”

That was it.

Years together reduced to one cold sentence.

Bethany closed her eyes tightly, fighting tears again.

Then suddenly—

A knock came at the hospital door.

She sighed softly without looking up. “Come in.”

The door opened slowly.

And the moment Bethany looked toward it…

Her entire body froze.

Standing there was someone she never expected to see again.

Evan.

Her ex-boyfriend.

The man she dated years before Larry came into her life.

The same man who once loved her so deeply that losing her completely shattered him.

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

Bethany stared in pure shock.

Evan looked nervous standing there holding a bouquet of white roses in one hand. He wore jeans, a dark hoodie, and the same calm expression Bethany remembered from years ago.

Only now he looked older.

More serious.

But his eyes still softened the moment he saw her.

“Hey, Beth.”

Her throat tightened instantly.

“Oh my God…”

Evan gave a small awkward smile. “Yeah… surprise.”

Bethany sat there speechless while emotions flooded through her all at once.

Confusion.

Shock.

Memories.

Pain.

Because the truth was complicated.

Before Larry…

There was Evan.

And before all the chaos, toxic fights, jealousy, and heartbreak…

Bethany once knew what peaceful love felt like.

Evan slowly stepped further into the room.

“I heard about the accident,” he said quietly. “Your cousin posted something online.”

Bethany looked down nervously. “I didn’t know you still followed my family.”

“I don’t,” he admitted. “A friend sent it to me.”

Silence filled the room again.

The tension wasn’t angry.

It was emotional.

Unfinished.

Evan carefully placed the flowers beside her bed.

“You okay?”

Bethany almost laughed at the question.

Was she okay?

Physically maybe.

Emotionally?

Not even close.

“I’ve been better,” she whispered.

Evan nodded slowly like he already knew that before walking into the room.

For years after their breakup, he heard things about Larry and Bethany’s relationship. The arguments. The breakups. The emotional chaos.

And every time he heard another story…

Part of him hated himself for still caring.

Bethany looked at him carefully now.

“You really came all the way here?”

Evan shrugged softly. “Couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

Her eyes immediately filled slightly with tears.

Not because she suddenly wanted him back.

But because his presence reminded her of something she forgot existed:

Gentleness.

Peace.

Concern without yelling.

Evan pulled a chair beside the bed and sat down quietly.

Neither of them knew what to say at first.

Too much history sat between them.

Finally Bethany asked softly, “How’ve you been?”

Evan smiled faintly. “Honestly?”

“Yeah.”

“Better now than I was after you left.”

That answer hit her hard.

Because she remembered how badly she broke him back then.

Years ago, Bethany ended things with Evan because she felt drawn toward Larry’s excitement, passion, and unpredictability. Larry made life feel intense.

Dangerous.

Alive.

But over time, intensity turned into exhaustion.

And now sitting in this hospital bed…

Bethany suddenly remembered how safe she once felt with Evan.

No screaming matches.

No emotional games.

No constant chaos.

Just love.

Simple love.

Evan noticed the sadness in her face immediately.

“You still thinking about him?”

Bethany looked away.

Of course she was.

Larry still owned pieces of her heart no matter how damaged things became.

“That obvious?” she asked weakly.

Evan sighed quietly.

“You got the same look you used to have after y’all fought.”

Bethany frowned slightly. “You knew?”

“Everybody knew.”

That embarrassed her deeply.

Evan leaned forward with his elbows resting on his knees.

“I’m not here to talk bad about him,” he said calmly. “But Bethany… you don’t look happy.”

Those words nearly broke her instantly.

Because deep down…

She knew he was right.

Tears rolled slowly down her cheeks before she could stop them.

“I tried so hard,” she whispered emotionally. “I loved him so much.”

Evan’s expression softened painfully watching her cry.

“I know you did.”

“And it still wasn’t enough.”

The heartbreak in her voice filled the room.

For a moment, Evan looked like he wanted to say something but stopped himself.

Then finally—

“You know what hurt me most after we broke up?”

Bethany looked at him quietly.

“Watching you slowly disappear.”

Her breathing caught.

Evan shook his head sadly.

“You used to laugh all the time, Beth. You used to dream bigger. Then every time I saw you after Larry… you looked more tired.”

Bethany cried harder now because hearing it out loud made everything feel real.

She had changed.

A lot.

The relationship drained her emotionally piece by piece until sadness started feeling normal.

Evan looked toward the hospital window for a moment before speaking again.

“I spent years angry at you for leaving me,” he admitted. “But honestly… I think you were searching for something.”

Bethany wiped her tears slowly.

“Maybe.”

“But I don’t think you found it.”

Silence.

Heavy silence.

Then suddenly—

The hospital door opened again.

And Bethany’s stomach dropped instantly.

Larry.

He froze the moment he saw Evan sitting beside her bed.

The room’s atmosphere changed immediately.

Tension exploded silently between both men.

Larry’s jaw tightened.

Evan slowly stood up.

Bethany looked back and forth between them in panic.

Neither spoke at first.

But the anger in Larry’s eyes said enough.

“What’s he doing here?” Larry asked coldly.

Evan answered before Bethany could.

“Visiting somebody I care about.”

Larry laughed bitterly under his breath.

“Funny how exes always show up when things bad.”

Evan stayed calm. “Funny how current boyfriends disappear until somebody else does.”

Bethany immediately spoke. “Stop.”

But neither man looked away from the other.

Years of jealousy, tension, and unresolved emotions suddenly filled the tiny hospital room.

Larry looked toward Bethany finally.

“You called him?”

“No,” she answered honestly.

That somehow made Larry even more upset.

Because it meant Evan came on his own.

Meanwhile Larry almost didn’t come at all.

The guilt hit him instantly.

Evan grabbed his jacket calmly.

“I’m not here to fight,” he muttered.

Then he looked toward Bethany one last time.

“I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

The softness in his voice contrasted painfully against the tension Larry brought into the room.

And Bethany noticed it immediately.

Evan headed toward the door, but before leaving, he stopped beside Larry.

Then quietly said something that shook the entire room:

“She deserves peace, man.”

And with that…

He walked away.

Leaving Bethany emotionally overwhelmed and Larry standing there silently realizing something terrifying for the first time:

Someone else might actually know how to love her better than he did.
