* Larry angrily told Bethany he was tired of her, and Bethany just stood there crying because her heart still belonged to him."

The apartment was painfully quiet except for the sound of Bethany crying softly near the kitchen counter.

Larry stood across the room with his hands on his hips, pacing back and forth like he was trying to contain years of frustration all at once. His jaw was tight. His breathing heavy. Every emotion he had buried for months was finally exploding to the surface.

And Bethany could feel it.

Tonight wasn’t just another argument.

Something felt different.

Dangerously different.

Rain slammed against the windows while the dim kitchen light cast long shadows across the apartment they once filled with laughter and dreams. Now it felt cold. Empty. Broken.

Bethany wiped tears from her cheeks as she watched Larry avoid eye contact with her completely.

“Say something,” she whispered shakily.

Larry laughed bitterly under his breath.

“You really want me to say something?”

His voice sounded exhausted.

Not just angry.

Exhausted.

That scared Bethany even more.

For years, no matter how bad their fights became, Larry always found his way back emotionally. But tonight there was a distance in his eyes she had never seen before.

A dangerous kind of emotional numbness.

Bethany stepped closer carefully.

“Larry…”

“Stop,” he snapped instantly.

She froze.

“I’m serious, Bethany. Just stop.”

Tears rolled harder down her face.

The fight had started earlier that evening after Bethany accused him of ignoring her again. Larry had spent days acting distant—short replies, missed calls, disappearing for hours without explanation.

Bethany felt him slipping away.

And the more afraid she became of losing him…

The harder she tried holding onto him.

But instead of bringing them closer, it pushed Larry further away.

Now they stood in the middle of the wreckage of another screaming match neither of them could even fully remember anymore.

“You know what I’m tired of?” Larry suddenly said coldly.

Bethany looked up slowly.

“I’m tired of the crying.”

His words hit her like a slap.

“I’m tired of the arguing.”

Another step closer to heartbreak.

“I’m tired of waking up every day feeling trapped in this same miserable cycle.”

Bethany shook her head immediately.

“We can fix this—”

“No,” Larry interrupted sharply. “YOU can’t keep pretending everything’s fixable.”

Her chest tightened painfully.

Larry finally looked directly at her now, and the pain in his expression nearly broke her completely.

“I’m tired of you, Bethany.”

Silence.

Pure silence.

Even the rain outside seemed quieter after those words.

Bethany stared at him like she stopped breathing.

Because out of everything Larry had ever said during their fights…

That hurt the most.

Not because he yelled it.

But because he sounded serious.

Bethany’s lips trembled uncontrollably.

“You don’t mean that…”

But deep down…

She knew he did.

Larry rubbed both hands over his face in frustration.

“Yes I do.”

The tears falling down Bethany’s face became uncontrollable now.

Her entire body felt weak.

For years she had loved Larry harder than she loved herself sometimes. Through every breakup. Every betrayal. Every painful moment. She stayed because part of her believed their love was stronger than the chaos around them.

But standing there tonight…

She realized love alone wasn’t enough anymore.

“You can’t just stop loving me,” she whispered brokenly.

Larry looked away instantly because hearing her cry was destroying him too.

“You think this easy for me?” he muttered.

“Then why are you saying these things?”

“Because I’m drowning, Bethany!”

His sudden outburst echoed through the apartment.

“I can’t breathe in this relationship anymore!”

Bethany covered her mouth while sobbing harder.

Every word shattered her further.

Larry slammed his hand against the kitchen counter before turning away angrily.

“I’m tired of fighting every day.”

“We fight because I care!” Bethany cried.

“No—we fight because we’re destroying each other!”

That truth hung heavily between them.

Painfully true.

Bethany slowly sank down into a chair while crying into her hands. Her heart felt like it physically hurt inside her chest.

But the worst part?

Even after everything he just said…

She still loved him.

Completely.

Unconditionally.

That’s what made this so unbearable.

Larry looked toward her again and immediately regret flashed across his face seeing her completely broken down. For a moment, his anger faded and guilt replaced it.

Because despite everything…

He still loved her too.

But love had become exhausting.

Toxic.

Heavy.

Neither of them knew how to carry it anymore.

Bethany looked up at him through tears.

“Why does it feel so easy for you to let me go?”

Larry’s expression cracked slightly.

“Because if I let myself feel everything right now…” he whispered painfully, “I’ll never leave.”

That answer destroyed her even more.

Because she could hear the truth in it.

Larry wasn’t leaving because he stopped loving her.

He was leaving because loving each other had started hurting too much.

Bethany stood slowly and walked toward him with trembling hands.

“I don’t know how to stop loving you,” she admitted softly.

Larry closed his eyes tightly for a moment like he was fighting emotions threatening to overwhelm him.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

The only sound was Bethany quietly crying while standing inches away from the man who still owned her heart.

And somehow…

That made everything even sadder.

Because sometimes the most painful relationships aren’t the ones where love disappears.

They’re the ones where love remains…

But peace does not.

Larry finally stepped backward slowly, creating distance between them again.

Bethany’s face crumbled instantly.

That small step felt like goodbye.

“I think we both need to let go,” he whispered hoarsely.

But Bethany couldn’t answer.

Because her heart still belonged to him completely.

Even as he walked away from her. 💔
