8 . Amber discovers Dave’s secret deal with Evelyn—but the third part changes EVERYTHING

The rain against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse sounded like gravel striking glass. Amber stood in the doorway of Dave’s home office, holding a mug of chamomile tea that was rapidly growing cold. Dave was in the shower, the hum of running water masking her quiet footsteps as she approached his mahogany desk.

She wasn’t looking for betrayal. She was looking for a misplaced set of car keys. But the glow of his desktop monitor, left unblocked and awake, caught her eye. Open on the screen was a draft email addressed to Evelyn Vance—Dave’s former business mentor, a woman whose mere name usually made Dave’s jaw clench in silent resentment.

Amber leaned closer, her pulse quickening as her eyes scanned the top document attached to the draft: SETTLEMENT & TRANSFER AGREEMENT.

The first part of the deal was a brutal punch to her chest. Dave was transferring 60% of his tech startup’s equity to Evelyn. It explained the late nights, the sudden distance, and the hollow exhaustion behind his eyes. He was surrendering his life’s work to the woman who had tried to bankrupt him three years ago. Amber felt a wave of cold anger. He had sworn to her that they were partners, yet he was quietly bowing to his fiercest enemy.

She scrolled further, her eyes darting across the legalese to the second part of the agreement. This section was personal, and it stung even deeper. In exchange for the equity, Evelyn agreed to drop all pending litigation against Dave, clear his remaining debt, and guarantee a covert monthly stipend sent directly to Amber’s personal account—disguised as a third-party consulting fee. Dave was sacrificing his entire career to secure Amber's financial future without her knowledge, treating her like a fragile dependent who needed to be quietly provided for rather than an equal partner who could stand by him in a fight.

Tears of frustration hot in her eyes, Amber went to close the window, unable to read any more of his self-martyring nonsense. But as her fingers hit the trackpad, her hand froze. A third clause, tucked neatly beneath an obscure indemnity section, caught the light.

Section 3.3: Reassignment of Beneficial Title.

Amber read it once. Then twice. The breath caught entirely in her throat.

The third part did not surrender the company to Evelyn. It legally defined Evelyn’s firm as a non-voting shell entity whose sole purpose was to absorb the massive, undisclosed liabilities of Dave’s original parent company. By signing the agreement, Evelyn wasn't seizing Dave’s empire—she was unknowingly inheriting a Trojan horse of debt, regulatory audits, and toxic assets that Dave had meticulously funneled into a single sub-corporation over the last eighteen months. In return, the real, clean assets of the enterprise were automatically transferred into an irrevocable trust—held entirely in Amber’s name.

Dave hadn’t surrendered to Evelyn. He hadn't just tried to protect Amber with a payout, either. He was executing a total, ruthless liquidation of his enemy, using Evelyn’s own greed as the trap, while quietly making Amber the sole owner of the actual business.

The bathroom door clicked open. Dave emerged, a towel draped around his neck, stopping dead in his tracks as he saw Amber standing by the glowing monitor.

"Amber," he said softly, the color draining from his face. "You weren't supposed to see that."

Amber looked up from the screen, the cold tea forgotten in her hand, watching the man she thought she knew so well
