“That’s what I thought.”

She walked farther into the room.

“I gave you every opportunity to tell me the truth. Every single one.”

Dave tried to calm her down.

“Nothing happened.”

Amber shook her head.

“Nothing happened? Then why have you been hiding Evelyn from me?”

Dave didn't answer.

And that silence told Amber more than words ever could.

Evelyn finally stepped forward.

“I came here because Dave asked me to.”

Amber looked at Dave.

“You asked her to come here?”

Dave nodded slowly.

“It was about something from the past.”

Amber's expression changed.

“The past?”

Dave explained that Evelyn had information about an old situation that he had been trying to resolve. He claimed he hadn't told Amber because he didn't want to create another argument.

But Amber wasn't convinced.

“You don't get to decide what I deserve to know.”

Dave looked down.

Amber continued.

“You kept secrets. You lied about where you were. You ignored my questions. And now I walk in and find you alone with Evelyn.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“Amber, I swear, there is more to this.”

Amber turned toward her.

“Then tell me.”

Evelyn hesitated.

Dave immediately said, “Evelyn, don't.”

Amber's eyes widened.

“Don't what?”

Dave realized he had made the situation even worse.

“What exactly were you afraid she was going to tell me?”

Evelyn looked at Dave.

“What does that mean?”
