"When Shayla told Amber that Anthony was getting married to D'Nisha, what did Amber do?"
Amber had been trying to move forward with her life. After months of heartbreak, arguments, and unanswered questions with Anthony, she convinced herself that the worst was finally behind her. She focused on rebuilding her confidence, spending more time with family, and avoiding the constant drama that seemed to follow Anthony everywhere.
But everything changed on a quiet Saturday afternoon.
Shayla arrived at Amber's house looking nervous. The moment Amber opened the door, she could tell something was wrong.
"Shayla... what's going on?" Amber asked.
Instead of answering immediately, Shayla walked inside and sat down. She held her hands together, taking a deep breath before finally speaking.
"I didn't want you to hear this from someone else."
Amber's heart immediately began to race.
"Hear what?"
Shayla looked directly into Amber's eyes.
"Anthony is getting married... to D'Nisha."
For a few seconds, the room became completely silent.
Amber blinked several times, unsure if she had heard correctly.
"What?"
"Anthony and D'Nisha are planning a wedding."
Amber laughed nervously.
"No... you're joking."
"I wish I was."
Amber stood up from the couch.
"That's impossible! Anthony told me he needed time to figure himself out. He said he wasn't ready for another relationship."
Shayla slowly nodded.
"I know."
Amber's smile disappeared. Her face turned pale as reality slowly settled in.
"So... while he was telling me he needed space... he was planning a wedding?"
Shayla couldn't answer.
The silence said everything.
Amber walked toward the kitchen, trying to stay calm, but tears quickly filled her eyes.
"I gave that man everything," she whispered.
"I stood by him when nobody else did."
"I defended him."
"I believed every promise."
"And now..."
Her voice cracked.
"He's marrying someone else."
The emotions she'd been holding back for months suddenly exploded.
Amber began crying uncontrollably.
She wasn't crying because she wanted Anthony back.
She was crying because she finally realized that every promise he'd made had been empty.
Shayla wrapped her arms around her friend.
"I'm so sorry."
After several minutes, Amber finally collected herself.
She wiped away her tears and asked quietly,
"When is the wedding?"
"Next month."
Amber looked out the window.
"So he's really moving on."
Shayla hesitated before speaking again.
"There's something else."
Amber looked at her.
"People are saying D'Nisha knew Anthony was still talking to you."
Amber's expression changed instantly.
"What?"
"I don't know if it's true... but that's what everyone is saying."
Amber felt anger replacing sadness.
"So they both lied to me."
She grabbed her phone and scrolled through social media.
Within seconds, she found photos.
Anthony and D'Nisha were smiling together at a jewelry store.
Another picture showed D'Nisha proudly showing off a sparkling engagement ring.
The comments were full of congratulations.
Amber stared at the screen in complete disbelief.
Her hands began shaking.
"He really did it."
She threw her phone onto the couch.
"I was the last person to know."
For the rest of the evening, Amber replayed every conversation she'd ever had with Anthony.
Every excuse.
Every canceled plan.
Every late-night text.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The next morning, Amber decided she wasn't going to hide anymore.
She got dressed, fixed her makeup, and walked into work with her head held high.
Her coworkers expected to see a broken woman.
Instead, they saw someone determined.
Later that afternoon, Anthony unexpectedly called.
Amber looked at the screen for several seconds before answering.
"Hello."
"Amber... I was going to tell you."
She laughed.
"Were you?"
"I just didn't know how."
"You found plenty of ways to lie."
Anthony sighed.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
"You should have thought about that before buying someone else an engagement ring."
There was complete silence on the other end.
Amber continued.
"You know what hurts the most?"
"What?"
"I believed you."
Anthony quietly apologized.
"I'm sorry."
Amber smiled sadly.
"Sorry doesn't erase betrayal."
Without another word, she ended the call.
Days passed, and invitations for Anthony and D'Nisha's wedding began circulating among friends.
Many people assumed Amber would try to stop the wedding.
Instead, she surprised everyone.
She politely declined every conversation about it.
She refused to attend.
She refused to argue.
She refused to compete.
Instead, she started focusing on herself.
She joined a fitness class.
She enrolled in a business course she'd always wanted to take.
She began traveling with friends and reconnecting with people she'd neglected during her relationship.
Slowly, the sadness faded.
One evening, Shayla visited again.
"You seem... different."
Amber smiled.
"I finally realized something."
"What?"
"I wasn't crying because Anthony was getting married."
"Then why?"
"I was mourning the future I thought we were going to have."
Shayla nodded.
Amber continued.
"But that future was never real."
Months later, Anthony and D'Nisha's marriage became the talk of the town after rumors of constant arguments began spreading.
Amber heard the gossip but chose not to get involved.
She had already closed that chapter of her life.
When people asked if she regretted walking away, she simply smiled.
"No."
"They didn't take my future."
"They only took a place in my past."
And for the first time in a very long time, Amber realized she wasn't surviving anymore.
She was finally living.
