It was just after 8:00 on a quiet Sunday evening when Anthony's phone suddenly rang.
He glanced at the screen.
Delicia Calling...
Normally, Delicia wouldn't call unless it was important. Anthony answered immediately.
"Hey, Delicia. Is everything okay?"
There was a long pause.
Her voice was shaky.
"Anthony... you need to stay calm."
Anthony immediately stood up from the couch.
"What happened?"
Delicia took a deep breath.
"I just got a call about Kai."
Anthony's heart dropped.
"What about Kai?"
"I'm still trying to confirm everything, but I was told he was taken to the hospital after suddenly becoming very ill."
Anthony froze.
"What? How? Is he okay?"
"I don't know yet," Delicia replied. "I'm on my way there now."
Without saying another word, Anthony grabbed his car keys and rushed out the door.
Meanwhile, Shayla was at home, completely unaware of what was happening.
She was making dinner when she noticed three missed calls from Delicia and one from Anthony.
A feeling of dread settled over her.
She called Anthony back immediately.
He answered on the first ring.
"Anthony, what's going on? Why did you call me?"
Anthony hesitated.
"Shayla..."
His silence made her even more nervous.
"What is it? Please tell me!"
"I just heard something about Kai."
Shayla's hands began to shake.
"What happened to Kai?"

"What do you mean you don't know?"
"There are reports that he was rushed to the hospital."
The spoon slipped from Shayla's hand and clattered onto the kitchen floor.

Within minutes, Shayla was in her car, driving toward the hospital.
Her thoughts raced.
She remembered laughing with Kai just the day before.
He had seemed perfectly fine.
How could everything change so quickly?
As she drove, she whispered the same question over and over.

When Anthony arrived at the hospital, he found Delicia standing near the emergency entrance.
She looked exhausted.
"Any news?" Anthony asked.
Delicia shook her head.

Anthony stared toward the emergency doors, hoping someone would come out with an update.
A few minutes later, Shayla rushed through the hospital entrance.
Her eyes were filled with panic.
She spotted Anthony immediately.
"Anthony!"
He turned around.
"Shayla..."
She grabbed his arm.
"What happened to Kai?"
Anthony lowered his head.

Tears began rolling down Shayla's cheeks.

The waiting room slowly filled with friends and relatives.
Amber arrived carrying bottled water for everyone.

Every time a doctor walked through the hallway, everyone stood up, hoping for news.
Nearly two hours later, a physician entered the waiting room.
The room fell silent.
"Family and close friends?" the doctor asked.
Everyone gathered closer.
The doctor spoke carefully.
"Kai is receiving treatment. He's stable at the moment, but we're continuing tests to understand what caused his sudden illness."
A collective sigh of relief swept through the room.
Shayla wiped away her tears.
"So... he's alive?"
"Yes," the doctor replied. "He's awake, but he needs time to recover."
Shayla closed her eyes and whispered, "Thank goodness."
The next morning, visitors were finally allowed into Kai's room one at a time.
Shayla volunteered to go first.
She walked in slowly.
Kai looked tired, but when he saw her, he managed a faint smile.
"You look worried," he joked softly.
Shayla's eyes filled with tears.
"Worried? You scared all of us!"
Kai apologized.
"I didn't mean to."
Shayla sat beside his bed.
"When Anthony told me you'd been rushed to the hospital, I kept asking one question."
Kai looked at her.
"What question?"
"What happened to Kai?"
He smiled gently.
"I'm still figuring that out myself."
They both laughed quietly, breaking the tension that had filled the room for hours.
Over the next few days, doctors continued monitoring Kai while he regained his strength. Family members took turns visiting him, sharing stories and encouragement that lifted his spirits.
When Kai was finally discharged, everyone gathered outside the hospital to welcome him home.
Anthony gave him a warm hug.
"You had us all worried."
Delicia smiled with relief.
"I've never been happier to see you standing."
Finally, Shayla stepped forward.
For a moment, she couldn't find the words.
Then she simply said, "Promise me you'll take care of yourself."
Kai nodded.
"I promise."
As they walked toward the parking lot together, everyone realized how precious life and friendship truly were.
