"Brooke called Isaiah and whispered, 'Let's run away and get married in secret,' only to have her hopes crushed when Isaiah said no."

The rain tapped softly against Brooke’s bedroom window as she sat curled up on the edge of her bed, clutching her phone so tightly her knuckles had turned white. The house was silent except for the ticking clock on the wall and the occasional thunder rumbling in the distance. It was nearly midnight, but sleep felt impossible.

Not after everything that had happened.

Not after the fight.

Not after hearing Isaiah tell her earlier that day, “Maybe love isn’t enough anymore.”

Those words kept replaying in her head like a song she couldn’t escape.

Brooke wiped at her tears angrily. She hated crying. Hated feeling weak. But the thought of losing Isaiah felt like someone slowly ripping her heart apart piece by piece.

For three years, he had been her person.

The boy who held her hand during panic attacks.
The boy who skipped parties just to sit with her on the hood of his car and watch the stars.
The boy who promised her over and over, “No matter what happens, I’ll always choose you.”

But lately… everything had changed.

The pressure from their families.
The constant arguments.
The rumors.
The jealousy.
The feeling that the entire world wanted them apart.

Brooke stared at Isaiah’s contact photo glowing on her screen. Her thumb hovered over the call button for almost a full minute.

Then finally…

She pressed it.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

By the fourth ring, she almost hung up.

Then his sleepy voice answered.

“Brooke?”

The sound of his voice instantly broke something inside her.

“Hey…” she whispered shakily.

There was a pause. “Why are you awake?”

She swallowed hard. “I needed to hear you.”

Another silence stretched between them. Heavy. Uncomfortable.

Isaiah sighed softly. “Brooke… it’s late.”

“I know.”

“You okay?”

No.

She wasn’t okay at all.

But instead of saying that, she closed her eyes and whispered the dangerous thought that had been growing in her mind for weeks.

“Let’s run away.”

Isaiah went completely silent.

Brooke’s heart pounded so hard she thought he could hear it through the phone.

“We could leave tonight,” she continued quickly, her voice trembling with desperate hope. “Just you and me. We could drive somewhere far away where nobody knows us. We could get married in secret and start over.”

The words came pouring out now.

“No more fighting. No more people trying to ruin us. No more drama. Just us.” Her voice cracked. “Please, Isaiah.”

On the other end of the line, all she could hear was breathing.

Then finally—

“Brooke…”

The hesitation in his voice terrified her.

She sat up straighter. “Don’t think about everyone else for once. Think about us. Isn’t that what we always said we wanted?”

Isaiah let out a long exhale.

“You know I love you.”

Her chest tightened.

Whenever someone starts with you know I love you, heartbreak usually follows.

“But?”

He was quiet again.

And that silence hurt more than yelling ever could.

“But love isn’t enough to build a life right now,” he admitted softly.

Brooke felt tears instantly spill down her cheeks.

“No,” she whispered. “Don’t say that.”

“I’m trying to be realistic.”

“Realistic?” she repeated bitterly. “So that’s it? You’re giving up?”

“I’m not giving up.”

“Then come with me.”

“Brooke…”

“Please.” Her voice shattered completely now. “Please say yes.”

Isaiah closed his eyes on the other side of the call. She could almost picture him sitting on the edge of his bed, running a hand through his hair the way he always did when stressed.

“I can’t.”

The words hit her like a knife.

Brooke stopped breathing for a second.

“What?”

“I can’t run away with you.”

Her stomach dropped.

“No… no, you don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

Tears streamed down her face as panic flooded her chest.

“You promised you’d never leave me.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

“Yes, you are!” she cried. “You’re choosing everything else over me!”

“That’s not fair.”

“What’s not fair is loving someone with my entire heart and still not being enough for them!”

Isaiah’s voice cracked slightly for the first time. “You are enough.”

“Then why won’t you choose me?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence gave her the answer anyway.

Because he was scared.

Scared of responsibility.
Scared of ruining both their futures.
Scared of what would happen if love alone couldn’t survive reality.

“I have responsibilities, Brooke,” he finally said quietly. “My mom depends on me. My little brother looks up to me. I can’t just disappear.”

“We could figure it out together!”

“And what happens when we run out of money?” he asked gently. “What happens when reality hits? We’re not kids playing pretend anymore.”

Brooke shook her head even though he couldn’t see her.

“I don’t care about money.”

“But I do. Because I care about you.”

His voice softened painfully.

“You deserve more than sleeping in cheap motels and struggling every day because of some impulsive decision.”

“I’d rather struggle with you than lose you.”

The confession nearly destroyed him.

Isaiah covered his eyes, fighting his own tears now.

“You think I haven’t imagined it too?” he whispered. “Driving away with you. Starting over somewhere nobody knows our names. Waking up next to you every morning.”

Brooke’s breathing hitched.

“Then why not?”

“Because fantasies aren’t real life.”

Her heart cracked a little more.

For the first time ever, Isaiah sounded like someone she didn’t recognize.

Not the reckless boy who used to talk about forever like it was easy.

This version of him sounded exhausted.

Broken.

Defeated.

And suddenly Brooke realized something terrifying:

He had already started letting go before she had.

“I would’ve followed you anywhere,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“Then why am I standing here alone?”

Isaiah couldn’t answer.

A sob escaped Brooke’s throat as she pressed a trembling hand over her mouth.

The silence between them became unbearable.

Finally, Isaiah spoke in almost a whisper.

“If we’re meant to be, we won’t need to run away to prove it.”

But Brooke didn’t believe that anymore.

Because sometimes love doesn’t win.

Sometimes timing ruins everything.
Sometimes fear is stronger than feelings.
Sometimes two people love each other deeply and still can’t make it work.

Brooke stared blankly at the rain sliding down her window.

“So this is goodbye?” she asked weakly.

Isaiah’s breath caught.

“No,” he said immediately.

But he didn’t sound certain.

And that uncertainty hurt more than an actual goodbye ever could.

Brooke closed her eyes as another wave of tears fell.

“I really thought you’d say yes.”

Isaiah’s voice broke completely then.

“I wanted to.”

And somehow… that was the saddest part of all
