SHAYLA RECEIVE A BAD NEWS ABOUT KAI😱
The Call That Changed Everything
Shayla sat by the window, her phone glowing softly in her hand. The evening sky was streaked with orange and purple — the kind of sunset Kai always loved to photograph. He’d promised her he’d send a picture from his hike that afternoon. But hours had passed, and her messages to him remained unread.
Her phone buzzed suddenly. The screen lit up with “Unknown Number.”
“Hello?” she answered, her voice uncertain.
“Is this Shayla Adams?” The voice on the other end was calm but carried a weight that made Shayla’s heart pound. “This is Officer Daniels from the Ridgeview Police Department. I’m calling about a man named Kai Rivera. Do you know him?”
Shayla froze. Her breath caught in her throat.
“Yes, he’s—he’s my boyfriend. What happened?”
There was a pause. “I’m sorry, ma’am. There was an accident near the cliffs at Ridgeview Trail earlier today. A landslide occurred while several hikers were on the path. Kai was among them.”
The world seemed to tilt. Shayla gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles turning white. “Is he— Is he okay?” she whispered, her voice trembling.
“He’s alive,” the officer said quickly. “But he’s in critical condition. He’s been taken to St. Mary’s Hospital.”
Shayla didn’t even realize she’d dropped her phone until she heard it hit the floor. Tears blurred her vision as she scrambled to grab her keys.
The drive to the hospital felt endless. Her mind replayed every laugh, every late-night talk, every promise they made. When she arrived, the smell of antiseptic and the hum of fluorescent lights filled the air.
At the nurse’s desk, she said his name before they even asked for it. “Kai Rivera. Please — I need to see him.”
When they led her to his room, she stopped at the doorway. Kai lay there, pale but breathing, a bandage around his head, a soft beeping from the monitor beside him.
Shayla’s knees nearly gave out as she rushed to his side, gripping his hand.
“You scared me,” she whispered through tears. “You can’t leave me like that.”
Kai stirred slightly, his lips moving faintly. “Did… you get the picture?” he murmured.
A shaky laugh escaped her as tears streamed down her cheeks. “You still think about photos at a time like this?”
He smiled weakly. “You… love sunsets.”
Shayla pressed her forehead against his hand. “Just promise me you’ll be here to watch the next one with me.”
The monitor beeped steadily, and outside, through the window, the last traces of the sunset faded into night.
