It was a cold, quiet evening when Shayla’s phone began to ring nonstop. At first, she ignored it — she’d been arguing with Anthony earlier and didn’t want more stress. But then, she saw the caller ID… Kai’s school. Her heart dropped.

She answered with trembling hands, “Hello?”

“Mrs. Shayla,” the principal said softly, “there’s been an accident.”

The world around her froze. Shayla’s breath caught in her throat. “Wh–what do you mean accident? Is my son okay?”

“There was an incident during soccer practice,” the principal continued carefully. “Kai collapsed suddenly. The ambulance just took him to the hospital.”

Shayla’s phone nearly slipped from her hand. She ran out the door, barely locking it behind her. Her mind was racing — Kai was fine this morning! He laughed at breakfast, told her he’d score a goal for her today. How could this happen in just a few hours?

When she reached the hospital, she saw Iman and Amber already there. Shayla froze — why were they here?

Anthony arrived moments later, trying to calm her down. “Shayla, breathe. He’s stable now,” he said gently.

The doctor walked out, holding Kai’s chart. “Your son suffered a sudden drop in blood sugar and fainted. We’ve run tests — we suspect stress and fatigue. But we’ll need to monitor him closely.”

Shayla collapsed into a chair, sobbing with relief. Amber stepped forward quietly and placed a hand on her shoulder. “He’s strong, Shayla. He’ll be okay.”

For the first time in weeks, Shayla didn’t argue. She just nodded, eyes red with tears.

Later that night, sitting by Kai’s bedside, Shayla whispered softly, “I don’t care what happens between me and the others… I just need you to be okay, my baby.”
