For weeks, Mike had been carrying a question that he was too afraid to ask.

“I need to know if Kai is my son.”

Shayla didn't answer.

“I've been thinking about this for a long time. I tried not to bring it up because I didn't want to cause problems.”

“But every time I see him, I wonder.”

Shayla took a deep breath.

“Mike, this isn't something you can just ask me like that.”

“I know,” Mike replied. “But I need the truth.”

The room became completely silent.

Kai continued playing nearby, unaware of the serious conversation happening between the adults.

Mike looked toward him again.

“I don't want to come into his life and confuse him. I don't want to make promises I can't keep.”

He paused.

“But if I'm his father, I deserve to know.”

Shayla's eyes became emotional.

“You really want to know?”

Mike nodded.

“More than anything.”

Shayla sat down.

Mike remained standing in front of her.

She explained that the situation had been complicated from the beginning.

“A DNA test?”

Shayla nodded.

Mike took a deep breath.

“Yes.”

“That's all I want.”

“What happens if the test says you're not his father?”

Mike paused.

“That would hurt.”

“And what if it says you are?”

Mike looked at Kai.

His expression softened.

“Then I'll do everything I can to be there for him.”

Shayla became emotional.

“You're serious?”

Mike nodded.

“I've never been more serious about anything.”

Just then, Kai walked toward them.

“Mom?”

Shayla quickly wiped away her tears.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

“Are you staying?”

Mike smiled.

“I hope so.”

Kai smiled back.
