The plan was simple.

Dave stepped away.

People became quiet.

“Please don't fight today.”

Amber looked at her and took a deep breath.

“I'm not here to fight.”

Then she looked directly at Dave.

“But apparently everybody already decided I'm the problem.”

Dave shook his head.

Amber walked away.

For several minutes, she stayed by herself.

Everyone sang.

Omni’s momma smiled through her tears as she blew out the candles.

She sat beside her.

“You know something?” she said.

Amber looked toward Dave.

“I didn't come here to cause problems.”

“I know,” Omni’s momma said.

After a long pause, Amber stood up.

She walked toward Dave.

Everyone watched.

“I don't want to fight with you.”

Dave nodded.

“Neither do I.”

“I was hurt because I wasn't included.”

Dave looked down.

“I understand.”

“And maybe I shouldn't have shown up without being invited.”

Dave looked at her.

For the first time that evening, both of them seemed willing to calm down.

Dave finally said:

“Today isn't about us.”

Amber nodded.

“No. It's about her.”

They both looked toward Omni’s momma.

Dave smiled.

“Then let's make sure she has the birthday she deserves.”

Amber smiled slightly.

“Deal.”

The tension slowly disappeared.

Someone turned the music back up.

People started laughing again.

Amber even joined everyone for a birthday picture.

But just when everyone thought the drama was finally over…

Amber noticed something sitting on a nearby table.

It was an envelope.

She picked it up.

“What's this?”

Dave immediately turned around.

“Amber, don't—”

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph and a handwritten note.

Amber looked confused.

“What is this?”

Dave walked over quickly.

“That isn't for you.”

Dave didn't answer.
