Amber signed the receipt and took the large envelope into the house. The return address immediately caught her attention.
It was from Anthony's attorney.
Her hands trembled as she carefully opened it.
Inside were official divorce papers.
She sat silently on the couch, reading every page. Although she had known their marriage was in trouble, seeing the documents made everything feel final.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"So... this is really happening," she whispered.
Anthony Waits for an Answer
Across town, Anthony couldn't stop checking his phone.
His lawyer had already informed him that Amber would likely receive the papers that morning.
"You seem nervous," his attorney observed.

Anthony frowned.

"It's about Denisha."

"You haven't signed them?"
"Not yet."
He nodded.

Amber took a deep breath.

Anthony slowly unfolded it.
The note read:

Anthony stared at the words.
"I've never seen this before."
Amber nodded.
"I didn't think you had."
Anthony looked stunned.
"She really wrote this?"
"Yes."
Amber explained that Denisha had met with her because she felt guilty about how much tension existed between everyone.
According to Amber, Denisha had said she didn't want to be blamed for every problem in Anthony and Amber's marriage.
Anthony's Realization
Anthony slowly lowered the letter.
"I thought..."
Amber interrupted gently.
"I know what you thought."
"I believed Denisha wanted me to choose between the two of you."
Amber shook her head.
"That wasn't the impression I got."
Anthony looked down.
"For months I've been assuming things."
Amber sighed.
"That's why I wanted you to hear this before we finished the divorce."

The two sat quietly on a nearby bench.

Amber nodded.
